Second place award from 2008 Sex Positive Journalism Awards

By assaultofknowledge

I won an award today. One that doesn’t involve getting a picture of myself put on a company bulletin board for a month, nor is it an award that comes on a mug from Wall-Mart. I won a real award.

I wrote an article in Vue Weekly called “Let’s Talk About Sects” about temporary marriages in Shi’a Islam. On a whim I submitted it for to the Sex Positive Journalism Awards (The Sexies) . Today I found out that I won second place in the Features (other general-topic news publications).

I came across the new award while reading my favorite column, Savage Love, by Dan Savage, who is also a Sexies judge. This is my second Savage-connection, because, as some may remember, I did the theme music for Savage Lovecast episode #75. So I imagine Mr. Savage will be at the ceremony in New York City in October. I don’t care if second placers have to pay twice the air fare, I’ll be there, drinking cocktails with one of my favorite journalists.

And speaking of favorite journalists, my heart goes out to Mr. Tim Russert, one of the last remaining straight-thinkers in broadcast journalism.
