I know the anticipation has been cannibalizing your guts. I know the shakiness of your hands has become a personality trait. I know your hyperventilating is unrelenting. All for this moment. Ladies and gentlemen… I present the cover of Amazing Cats by Omar Mouallem.

Second place award from 2008 Sex Positive Journalism Awards

June 16, 2008

I won an award today. One that doesn’t involve getting a picture of myself put on a company bulletin board for a month, nor is it an award that comes on a mug from Wall-Mart. I won a real award.

I wrote an article in Vue Weekly called “Let’s Talk About Sects” about temporary marriages in Shi’a Islam. On a whim I submitted it for to the Sex Positive Journalism Awards (The Sexies) . Today I found out that I won second place in the Features (other general-topic news publications).

I came across the new award while reading my favorite column, Savage Love, by Dan Savage, who is also a Sexies judge. This is my second Savage-connection, because, as some may remember, I did the theme music for Savage Lovecast episode #75. So I imagine Mr. Savage will be at the ceremony in New York City in October. I don’t care if second placers have to pay twice the air fare, I’ll be there, drinking cocktails with one of my favorite journalists.

And speaking of favorite journalists, my heart goes out to Mr. Tim Russert, one of the last remaining straight-thinkers in broadcast journalism.

Edmonton Journal review of “If You Don’t Buy This CD The Terrorists Win”

June 15, 2008

This week, there was more about me in The Edmonton Journal, but, beleive it or not, it was not about my public profanity at Hip-Hop in the Park. Nope. They reviewed my album. It’s a fair review, spot on, in my opinion of an opinion. (3 out of 5 stars). Read the review online.

The sounds of Brooklyn hip-hop seep out of A.O.K.’s debut full-length If You Don’t Buy This CD the Terrorists Win. With his steady gangster-influenced flow and minimalist old school beats weaving in and out of symphonic string loops, this northern Alberta native proves he’s learned a thing or two from the genre’s greats.
Edmonton Journal\'s review of debut album.

According to the Hits (and Misses) of the week, I am better than the following artists:

  • Wolf Parade
  • Samuel James
  • Jewel

I’ve been comparing myself to Jewel my entire career. And finally I have exceeded her. I deserve her Grammys.

Look mom, I made a chart.

June 12, 2008

I was at CJSR today. Popping in to the gong show that Youth Menace always promises to be. Promoting the album and talking alcoholism facetiously, though we really weren’t supposed to. Anyway, I checked out the local charts… and I am ahead of The Roots. The Roots! Fucking pushed my seed in their bush tonight. Don’t believe me? Ch-ch-ch-check it out!

PS: My friend tells me I should start proofreading this blog.

PPS: No.

The Nigger Tape… HOLY SHIT!

June 10, 2008

Okay, on the real, I’m about 25% into listening to the new Nas & Green Lantern mixtape, The Nigger Tape, and I am losing my dick over this! My face is numb this is so hot. I know that doesn’t make sense, but if The Album Formally Known as Nigger is anything like this, it could be one of his best albums. In the meantime, enjoy a mixtape better than 90% of all rap albums.

Thanks to the approximately 700 people who made the first annual Hip-Hop in the Park a total success. The free, eight-hour, all-ages show received countless praise from its attendees–both those who planned on being there and had their expectations met or exceeded, and those who were strolling by, dropped in, and were pleasantly surprised. I believe that with your help we both represented Hip-Hop culture as a positive movement, and set a precedent for western Canadian rap.

And yet with the months of planning and hours of set-up and take-down gone, we’re still not ready to let this remarkable day go away. From hip-hop in the park to hip-hop in the dark, come celebrate one hip-hop culture one more time, and help support us so that Hip-Hop in the Park 2009 is even better.

On Saturday, June 28th @ Axis Cafe (103 St. & Jasper Ave.), Hip-Hop in the Park organizers will be holding a silent auction to raise money to pay off this years show, and help fund next years too. It is also a CD release party for rapper A.O.K., whose debut album “If You Don’t Buy this CD the Terrorists Win” drops June 10.

Performers include:

Jill Pollock and her ukulele

Kaz Mega
Locution Revolution

Probably the end of the Edmonton Journal debate

June 9, 2008

I don’t think there will be any more correspondence after this. Not that we’ve put a nail in the coffin, but because this controversy in drained.

Even more HHitP pix

June 9, 2008

They are from Nightlife Magazine’s online rogue, Kat Armand.

What’s really funny is that I keep linking other peoples pix, yet my pix–dozens taken and uploaded onto my mac–are still MIA. Why? Laziness. Forgetfulness. Both.
